There are times in all of our lives when we do things we regret. Peter Kirkland regretted not being older at the time of the Great War. He wanted to fight. He wanted to help the United Kingdom win. The boy had a romantic idea of sweeping onto the battle field, conquering the foes in his path and winning sweeping victories for the crown. But 12 was too young to lie convincingly enough. Sure, they’d accept a 16 year old claiming to be 18, but they turned away the 12 year old claiming to be 16. They weren’t so desperate as to enlist children. He hated that.
